Good lawn care: how can we make our lawn beautiful?
A lawn can be a real green rug and a beautiful garden decoration only if it is regularly and carefully looked after. If we want our lawn to be beautiful, we must take care of it. Only then will it be an ornament and an effective background for other plants. We advise on how to properly care for the lawn to decorate our garden. Proper lawn care is a condition that we must meet to have a nice lawn.
Lawn mowing
Mowing the lawn is one of the basic responsibilities of the lawn owner. You have to do it systematically with a mower with well-sharpened cutting elements, otherwise we can say goodbye to the beautiful turf. We mow the new lawn for the first time when the blades reach a height of 8-10 cm. We shorten them only by 1-1.5 cm. We mow the next two or three times similarly, and then lower and lower to the planned height. Usually a height of 3-6 cm is maintained, but when the weather is hot, it is better to cut the lawn higher.
Fertilize lawn
The second important element of lawn care is fertilization. Fertilizing the lawn ensures proper spreading and growth of plants. We carry out works when the soil is wet, but the plants are already dry (after rain or watering). We supply the new lawn for the first time in early autumn with a special autumn fertilizer for lawns, containing relatively high potassium and low nitrogen. Treated in this way, the plants are better prepared for winter and begin vegetation in better condition in early spring.
In the following seasons, in spring, when the soil dries, we spread a compound fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content on the lawn, and in the second half of the summer we repeat the treatment. We can also use autumn fertilizer until the first frosts. It is important to evenly spread the fertilizer on the lawn surface – otherwise the plants will grow clumps of various shades of green and different height. To avoid this, it is necessary to spread the fertilizer “crosswise”, i.e. once along, once across the lawn.
Watering the lawn
Watering your lawn has a significant impact on grass growth. This is the most tedious element of lawn care. The substrate must not be allowed to dry out and then rapidly fill in moisture. The lawn must be watered regularly, preferably with a dispersed stream of water, until the soil is saturated to a depth of about 15 cm. Portable sprinklers are perfect for watering the lawn, but the most convenient are automatic irrigation systems with a humidity and rain sensor. Water the lawn early in the morning or evening, after sunset. It is best to water the lawn once a week, but abundantly, and more often water the lawn – only during the drought.
